Sodick new VN series Wire-Cut EDMs
Affordable Wire- Cut EDMs with flat linear motors (LM) and ceramic work-zone.
Avant-garde technical solutions in the new LN3W series generator have improved the cutting accuracy of hard materials, such as polycrystalline diamonds and cubic boron nitride, as well as stepped parts of different thicknesses.
The new “LN3W/LP3W Power Supply” has resulted in a 5% to 15% increase in floating (open cut) machining speed compared to the previous model.
In addition, by monitoring the flow rate of the machining fluid and appropriately moving the pump, excess energy is suppressed, resulting in a 20% reduction in power consumption compared to the previous model.
Sodick VN-series Wire-Cut EDM features:
- LN3W series power supply unit capable of high-speed, high-precision and high-efficiency machining

The overview of Sodick Co., Ltd’s achievements in the field of linear motors for EDMs (Electric Discharge Machines) and their application in Wire-Cut EDMs. The development and eventual in-house production of these technologies marked a significant advancement in the industry. Let’s break down the main advantages you listed for Sodick’s flat Linear Motors (LMs):
Reliability and Longevity: With over two decades of successful operation, Sodick’s flat LMs have undoubtedly established themselves as reliable and long-lasting. This is a crucial attribute, especially in industries where machine downtime can lead to significant financial losses.
Highest Dynamic Precision: Precision is a key requirement in EDMs, as even the slightest inaccuracies can result in defective products or increased material wastage. Sodick’s linear motors offer high dynamic precision throughout their entire operation, ensuring consistent and accurate results. This can lead to higher product quality and fewer rejects.
High Power and Thrust: High power and thrust capabilities mean that the linear motors can handle demanding applications and workloads efficiently. This can potentially lead to faster production times and reduced operational costs.
Perfect Heat Sink: Heat management is crucial for the longevity and consistent performance of electrical machinery. By offering a perfect heat sink, Sodick’s flat LMs can effectively dissipate heat, thus preventing overheating issues which can otherwise reduce the machine’s lifespan or cause operational inconsistencies.
Extra Rigid Structure: An extra rigid structure ensures that the linear motors can withstand external stresses and maintain their performance levels even in challenging conditions. This rigidity can also reduce wear and tear, thus extending the machine’s operational life.
Approximately 70% of its electrical energy consumption in wire-cut EDM is attributed to the dielectric treatment system. To confront this, a novel solution has been implemented— the incorporation of a machining fluid control circuit, which is now a standard feature.
Innovative Solution:
The introduction of a machining fluid control circuit significantly optimizes the dielectric fluid management:
Inverter Implementation:
By integrating an inverter, the vertical flushing flow rate is adeptly controlled during the machining process. This not only ensures precision in fluid management but also mitigates unnecessary energy expenditure.Energy Reduction:
Remarkably, this innovative feature culminates in an approximate 20% reduction in power consumption during machine standby mode, presenting a stark contrast to traditional models.
Optimum control of machining fluid
Energy-saving Pump System
Multifaceted Benefits:
- Economic Impact:
The diminished energy usage directly correlates to a decrease in operational costs, providing a tangible financial advantage. - Environmental Consideration:
A reduction in energy consumption also translates to a reduced carbon footprint, affirming a commitment to environmentally responsible practices.
- Ceramic Work-Zone. Improvement in geometric accuracy by 3-4 times in comparison with metal-plastic working areas of non-Sodick EDMs.
Sodick ceramics thermal expansion is merely
4.5×10-6/°С.
Complete galvanic (electric) isolation of the Work-zone. - Hand scraped contacting bearing surfaces of meehanite cast iron parts
- All bearing construction parts of low thermal expansion meehanite cast iron (11×10-6/°С)
- Extra wide machine bed – superb horizontality at the extremes of travels
- THK SSR guideways (caged ball technology) designed for use primarily in precision measuring machines. The guideways can withstand movements 100 times more than the distance from the Earth to the Moon and back.
